Posted on 18/01/2010
Following a desk study on existing systems for e-waste management in the East-African Community, Close the Gap has organized a first field mission with 2 experts to gather missing information in order to establish a business plan for the implementation of an E-Waste management system.
Close the Gap visited Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda. In each country (e)-Waste companies, public authorities, informal economy actors, NGOs, institutional donors and financial institutions were visited.
The trip has was very useful and brought together main stakeholders interested in playing a role in e-waste management in the East African community. Based on this information, a business plan will be able to be finalized by June 2010. This plan will help the further professionalization of an e-waste management system for collection, dismantling and recycling of waste. It will ultimately support actions aimed at building a comprehensive financial and legal framework for the region.
